How One Wrong Text Led To A Thanksgiving Tradition

By Anthony K

How do you react to messages and calls from strange numbers? Some of us take the time and liberty to remind the callers or texters that they have the wrong number, while others quickly lash out. This story proves that your reaction at times could lead you in the wrong or right direction.

We feature an online encounter six years ago when Wanda Dench sent a message to her 24-year-old grandson inviting him to the annual Thanksgiving dinner. Instead of Wanda’s grandson’s inbox, the message landed in 17-year-old Jamal Hinton’s inbox. Jamal surprised Wanda by accepting the invitation and ushering in joy and friendship for both parties.

The story went viral after Jamal and his girlfriend Mikaela joined Wanda and her husband, Lonnie. Jamal claimed that the invitation reminded some good people are still available worldwide. Jamal and Mikaela became part of the annual party that Wanda hosted to appreciate her husband, alongside friends that would visit for dinner.

Wanda emitted a vibe that encouraged Jamal to feel at home. The duo developed a closer bond and held occasional meetings on non-holidays. Lonnie, Wanda’s husband, succumbed to COVID-19 complications, but Jamal and Mikaela were still part of the socially distanced Thanksgiving celebration.

Wanda has accepted Jamal and Mikaela as part of her family and some of her best companies with whom she can have quality time. Netizens keep a close eye on Jamal and his surrogate grandmother, hoping their bond may survive much longer. Wanda believes family goes beyond blood to include the people you want to be with.
